This vivid piece of Russian lacquer splendor was composed by talented Palekh artist Boris Velichko. There is positive energy and significant elegance in this work. With theme and palette in hand and mind, Velichko creates a composition that is subtle simple, yet furiously beautiful. Fine lines among a gathering of color and detail.
The box shows the rendezvous of a loving couple on board of a small sailing boat. Greens, blues, oranges and browns predominate here. The colors look magical because of the black lacquer exterior of the piece. The details are enhanced with gold and aluminum paint.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The scene is framed with gold beads while the box's sides are adorned with gold floral patterns accented with aluminum. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2008.
