Dukhovich from the village of Palekh has painted this scene with a winter troika (three horse sleigh) speeding through the Russian countryside. A loving couple hide from the snowstorm in the sleigh while a driver encourages the horses.
Tiny silver dots and swirls are drawn throughout the scene to imitate snowflakes and drifting snow. Gold paint is used to detail the sledge, the characters' costumes and the horses' harnesses, manes and tails.
The scene is framed with a nice gold swirling design while the box's sides are adorned with a rich gold leafy pattern.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2008 and the village of Palekh. On the box's exterior bottom the artist wrote “made in Russia” using gold paint.
