Yevgenia (Zhenya) Shatokhina is the artist who painted the composition on this box. This is a scene showing the Snowmaiden walking through the winter forest accompanied by various animals and birds. Light blue tones of tempera paints suitable for depiction of a winter scene predominate here. Most of the fine detail is added with the use of gold and aluminum paint that touches every feature of the scene.
The box is constructed out of high-quality paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer is used to paint the interior of the box. Gold pattern accented with aluminum snowflakes frames the scene on the lid. Highly intricate gold and aluminum ornamentation wraps around the sides of the box. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on three feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2006 and the village of Palekh.
