Title: Masquerade
Artist: Bykova Katerina
Size: 13x13x2.5
Size (inches): 5x5x1
Price : $495 SOLD!

This alluring box has been created by the famous Palekh artist, Ekaterina Bykova. Ekaterina produces her lacquer boxes both in the traditional Palekh style and a more unusual manner. She travelled to the United States twice in the past, to participate in exhibitions where her boxes were displayed.
The work is painted in the style that is innovative for the art of Palekh miniature. It is called “Masquerade”, and shows ladies and gentlemen dressed in the elegant costumes of medieval aristocracy. In the foreground we can see the gentleman who flirts with the lady and presents her the rose. Pearl beads are glued to the lady's fan, to the jester's hat and to another lady's earrings giving the composition a three-dimensional quality.
The scene is painted in light blue palette that is enlivened by lustrous splashes of gold paint. Gold paint is used to detail the costumes of the characters and to decorate the background with bright gold spots. The light violet exterior of the box is also decorated with shining gold spots and veins. The interior of the box is covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the lid's interior Bykova has written Palekh, the title, the fact that this work is an artistic original, and her name, all in gold.
