Description:

This beautiful piece of genuine Russian artistry was composed by the talented Irina Peskova from the village of Palekh. It shows a recognizable moment from the timeless fairy tale of "Cinderella", or "Zolushka" (it is the Russian version of the tale). Cinderella is a poor girl who works hard in the house of the stepmother. Her step sisters mock at her and compel her to fulfill very difficult tasks. This episode from the tale is depicted in the bottom part of the composition. Cinderella dreams to dance at the ball arranged at the royal palace. But she has neither an elegant dress nor fashionable shoes, and that is why she can't even enter the palace. Fortunately, Cinderella's godmother, a kind fairy, presents the girl the ball-dress, the crystal shoes and the golden carriage. Now Cinderella is ready to attend the royal ball. This episode from the tale is depicted in the upper part of the composition. The central part of the composition depicts the moment when the Prince falls in love with Cinderella at the ball.
Brown-red, blue and green tones of tempera paints predominate here. Gold and aluminum paints are used to add minute details throughout the scene. Some areas of the composition as the windows, the space inside the arches in the center of the composition and the stylized floral pattern that frames the loving couple in the center shine brightly because of gold metal leaf inlay.
The composition is framed with tiny gold beads. The edges of the lid and the box's sides are decorated with a rolling gold pattern accompanied by silver dots.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the box's exterior bottom Chibisov has painted a rich pattern over gold metal leaf inlay, and detailed this pattern with silver paint. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 2008.
