Description: This attractive Palekh box has been created by Anzhela Khamidova. Anzhela was born in 1967. During 1982-1987 she studied in the Palekh Art School. Themes of her works are folklore and literature.
The box shows a scene from the Russian fairy-tale "The Scarlet Flower". The merchant's daughter replaced her father, and became a prisoner in the sumptuous palace of the awful monster. She lead a life of luxury because the monster fulfilled any of her wishes. Soon she understood that the monster had a kind heart…
The scene is painted in various tones of tempera paints and neatly detailed with brilliant gold and silver paint. Gold metal leaf is inlaid into some elements of the composition including the table, all four jugs depicted in the foreground and the girl's crown. Silver metal leaf shines through some minor elements that decorate the girl's costume.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The edges of the lid are decorated with a gold rolling pattern. The sides the box's body are decorated with elaborate gold ornaments accented with silver paint. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the name of the artist, Palekh and the year of 2008.
