Description: This interesting box was painted by talented Artist Nataliya Latsuk from the village of Palekh. She is married to well-known Palekh artist Evgeniy Tselikov that is why her manner of painting bears resemblance to the painting technique of her husband.
Here Natalya depicts one of the Slavonic gods - the legendary Paradise Bird named Alkonost. It is half a woman, half a bird. It rules over weather and wind. Its singing is so beautiful that if somebody hears it, he forgets about everything including relatives and friends.
The bird is very well drawn. It has a pretty, female face, bright red and blue wings and a beautiful tale. The bird's body is highlighted richly with gold paints. In its claws the bird holds a golden twig bestrewed with golden leaves. The whole surface of the box including the lid, the sides and the base are covered with a mixture of green, and gold paints, while the blackness of the box is very apparent.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The edges of the lid, and the sides of the box are decorated with elegant gold patterns. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box; clear lacquer is added in layers that are polished to a gleaming finish. The box has no hinge and the base rests flat. It is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2004).
Fine work!
