Yevgeniy Populov is the artist who painted this traditional Palekh scene.
Here we can see a couple racing through the winter forest at a blistering pace while a driver encourages the horses. The pace that is being set by the driver looks like it will not be slowing any time soon.
The beautiful winter landscape is painted in cold blue tones, while the troika and the human figures are painted in warm orange, red, green and white tones. Gold and aluminum paints are applied within the composition to add brightness and detail. The application of metallic paints is very subtle yet yields great results.
The scene is framed with gold beads, while the box's sides are decorated with elegant gold ornamentation.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer is used to paint the interior of the box. The box has a shape of a glass holder. The box has a hinge located above the composition and rests on four legs. An artist has wrote Palekh, the year of 2006 and his name at the bottom of the composition in gold paint.
