Description: This traditional Palekh box is a creation of Natalya Denisova-Babanova. It shows a scene from the old French tale "Puss in Boots" written by Charles Perrault. Here we can see the Cat who starts to realize his plan of making his master happy. He tries to catch a hare intending to present it to the King. Later he will deceive the King telling him that the hare has been caught by his master, the Marquis of Carabas, during the hunt.
Green, brown and blue tones of tempera paints dominate here. Gold paint details each element of the depicted scene. This builds radiance and texture, both at the same time.
A nice gold pattern decorates the edges of the lid. On the box's exterior bottom the artist has written her name, Palekh, the title and the year of 1997 of which the piece was finished within the gold decorative frame typical for all works painted by Denisova-Baranova.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the top of the scene and rests on a flat bottom.
