Description: This traditional Palekh box is a creation of Dmitry Bonokin. It shows a scene from Saltykov-Shchedrin's satirical literary work "The Tale of How a Muzhik Fed Two Generals" that was written in 1869. In this work Saltykov-Shchedrin criticized political establishment and society of his time. Two generals miraculously found themselves on a desert island. They weren't capable of working and nearly died from hunger. Later they met the muzhik who saved them but he didn't receive gratitude from them.
The palette is based on warm tones to convey the bright spirit of the summer season. Gold and silver paint is used with great intricacy and delicacy to develop the finer elements in the composition. Gold paint is also used to decorate the box's exterior with beautiful ornaments.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2010.
