Talented Artist Feodor Kritov of Palekh is the artist who painted this traditional scene of speeding winter troika.
A loving couple traverses the snow-covered expanses of Russian countryside sitting in the sledge pulled at high speed by three mighty horses. The horses are painted in traditional orange, white, and red tempera paints that look so beautiful against the black background. Tiny silver dots are drawn throughout the scene to imitate swirling snowflakes. Gold paint is used to detail the sledge, the characters' costumes and the horses' harness. On the back side we can see village house covered with snow.
The edges of the lid and the box's sides are adorned with a gold ornament.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
