Description: This bright box has been created by Natalya Brovkina from the village of Palekh. Nataliya graduated from the Palekh Art School in 1987, where she studied under Gordeev, A.V. Borunov, N. Vikhrev and Nemtiniv.
The box shows a merry, festive scene. The Ram dressed like a gentleman, and the Hare dressed like a Princess are dancing the Caucasian Georgian dance called "lezghinka". They look like newlyweds performing their wedding dance. The guests: cockerels, hens, cats, foxes and other animals applaud loudly to such a beautiful couple.
The composition is painted in traditional Palekh style. The faces and figures of the animals are nicely paint and in good proportion. With a light hand and single-hair brush, Brovkina applies metallic gold and silver lines in such a fine manner that the scene glows and sparkles at the same time.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The composition is framed with a gold scrolling design; the box's sides are decorated with intricate gold leafy ornaments completed with silver flowers. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 2008.
