This attractive Palekh box is a creation of Gelisheva Ludmila. Ludmila resides in Palekh as a well-established Palekh artist. The themes of her works are mostly folklore and genre scenes.
The box shows a scene from the Russian folk fairy-tale "Vasilisa the Beautiful".
One merchant has only one daughter, and when her mother was duing she asked dauther to come to her and give her a doll. She said when you will be in trouble, just feed the doll and it'll help. Suddenly she died and later on merchant has married another woman with two daughters. The girl's cruel stepmother sending her to the forest to ask Baba-Yaga to give her work. It is the stepmother's pretext, in fact she wants Baba-Yaga to kill the girl. In the forest Vasilisa meets Baba-Yaga and three riders: the Red Sun Rider, the Dark Night Rider, and the Bright Day Rider. But, finally, this tale has a happy end. The handsome Prince offers the girl his hand and heart and invited her in his marvelous palace.
Here we can see the moment when Vasilisa goes throught the forest. Baba-Yaga's Hut is seen on the left side of the scene. One of the three riders is in the sky.The girl holds the doll that helps her to fulfill very difficult tasks given by Baba-Yaga.
The scene is painted in various shades of green tempera paints against the black lacquered background. Gelisheva enhances details with brilliant gold paint that makes the composition radiate with a tremendous glow!
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed with dark red lacquer.
The edges of the lid are adorned with a gold pattern, whereas the box's sides are decorated with more complex gold ornament. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition and the box rests on a wavy platform with six legs.
The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2015.
