This unusual scene was painted by Alexey Lapshin. It shows amusement of cats, but these cats are not ordinary. They are cats-mermaids, so they have fish tails, while from the top they are ordinary cats. One of them seats on the shell and smokes the hookah, while the other cat shows him the beautiful shell with a pearl inside it. Fish whirl here and there like butterflies, two of them carry a big casket. May be the cat that smokes the hookah is the customer, and the other one is the seller who offers his goods.
This scene is painted in gold paints against the black background. Aluminum paint is also used but in very little amount.
The edges of the lid are decorated with gold and aluminum beads. The sides of the box are adorned with the original gold patterns designed as seaweeds. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top and the box rests on four round legs. On the bottom of the box the artist paints in gold his name, the village of Palekh, and the date (2004).
