Description: This exceptional piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by the immensely talented Marina Denisenko of Palekh. It is designed in an unusual shape: it has the form of an inkstand! It consists of a square platform, which rests on for legs, and the box attached tightly to the platform. The interior of the box includes a pedestal for setting a bottle of ink with a circle hole in the middle.
The box's lid and the platform are decorated with a scene from "Swan Lake, the ballet brought to life by acclaimed composer P.I Chaikovsky. This ballet is based on the tale which tells about Prince Zigfried and his passionate love for Swan Princess Odetta. Princess Odetta and her sisters have been turned into white swans by a wicked sorcerer Rothbar. Once, strolling in the forest, Prince Zigfried comes across a lake with white swans swimming on its surface. Suddenly, the swans turn into the beautiful girls and Zigried falls in love with one of them, named Odetta. Odetta confesses that only the power of selfless love might destroy evil spell. The feelings of love and tenderness seized the Prince and he made a declaration of his love and swore to love Odetta till his death. Odetta believes him, but his feelings must be tested. Rothbar does everything to part Odetta from Zigfried. (read the full version of this story on our website)
The composition on the box's lid extends to all four sides of the box's and to the platform on which the box rests. So, the lid's composition shows the moment of the story when some of the swans have already turned into the beautiful girls before the Prince's eyes, while the bottom part of the platform, as well as the box's bottom side show the lake with other swans getting ready to turn into the girls. Other parts of the platform and the box's sides depict beautiful fairy-tale landscape filled with skillfully painted medieval architecture, multicolored flowers, grass, and trees. Beautiful flowers: roses, daisies, lilies seem to be countless, it seems that the piece is in full bloom. The palette is very bright and fresh. Magnificent shades of green, in every tone imaginable, bring the well detailed landscape to life. The remaining portions of radiant oranges, gorgeous oceanic blues and rich mochas enliven the characters and their surroundings. The golden and aluminum glow within the scene is a trademark of Denisenko. A relaxing atmosphere has been created. A tribute to the master, who is always a fine ambassador of the village of Palekh.
The piece is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior while a vibrant red lacquer completes the interior. The interior of the box is also decorated with a twig of an apple tree bestrewed with pink blossoms. Gold ornamentation decorates the edges of the platform, and gold beads decorate its sides and legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, villa
