Description:

This round box, dipped in festivity and coated with technique, was composed by the talented Pavel Suloev from the village of Palekh. The lid of the box, and its sides are adorned with colorful compositions that depict a merry-go-round. Girls and lads dressed in bright, festive clothes ride multicolored steeds. Some of them hold bright balloons, accordions, candies in their hands, the others hold flags and guitars. The compositions are enriched with garlands of flowers, gold stars, tiny gold patterns and intricate gold scrollwork. The composition on the box's lid is painted against the black background that helps to reproduce the dark sky, covered with gold stars, while the composition on box's sides is painted against the blue background with red and green patches. The round shape of the box suit perfectly for the depiction of a marry-go-round. If you try to turn the box on you palm, you'll be amazed to see the small model of a marry-go-round. Small bright figures riding multicolored steeds will begin to spin merrily, and it seems that we can hear their voices and laughter.
The entire scene is beautifully drawn, with Suloev's customary attention to detail. The palette is a rainbow of various jewel-like colors, and again the details are enhanced by superlative shading with gold paint. The box shines with gold and festivity.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A simple gold line frames the composition on the lid, whereas the intricate gold ornamentation decorates the lid's sides. The bottom of the box's sides is also adorned with a gold line. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a small rim. Signed with the artist's name, the village of Palekh, and year (2002) on the interior of the lid.
