Aleksey Zhiryakov from the village of Palekh is the artist who painted this marvelous box of museum quality that can adorn any collection.
Here the artist has chosen to depict the Sea King who is the character of many fairy-tales including "Sadko", "The Sea King and Vasilisa the Wise", etc. He sits on the sea bottom surrounded with mermaids.
The composition is complex and multifigured. It combines the figure of Sea King, six mermaids and dozens of various water plants and fish. Each element is originally painted especially the Sea King and the mermaids. The costumes of all characters are interestingly designed, and have a true fairy-tale appeal. The composition is expertly detailed with gold and aluminum paints, for instance, each hair of the Sea King is painted separately with aluminum paints; and his armor shines brightly with gold paints.
The edges of the box are adorned with beautiful gold ornamentation. The sides of the box are decorated with unique patterns presented here like additional miniatures that depict the sea bottom and its underwater world filled with various water plants and fish. These patterns are painted only in gold and aluminum paints.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2005 and the village of Palekh.
