Description: This colorful box was painted by Andrey Zhiryakov. The Zhiryakov name has gained prominence in the village Palekh. Andrey's relative, Alexey, is a talented Palekh artist whose name is familiar to any person interested in the art Russian lacquer miniature painting.
The work is called "Cards", and features the King of Clubs, the King of Spades, the King of Diamonds and the Jester playing cards. The suit (sign of a card) of each king can be easily denoted with the help of their crowns or scepters that repeat the form of their suits. The figures are painted within the boundaries of two paper cards, and as in real playing cards each card features upper parts of two figures located opposite each other. But these cards are not real ones; they are products of artist's fantasy who animated the kings and the jester painted on them. The figures move, smile, think over their moves; their detailed, individualized faces show different emotions. The bright costumes of the characters are elaborately detailed with multiple of folds, and each of them has a peculiar trait. The most interesting costume has the king of Spades who is depicted as a Chinese Emperor.
The subject of this composition is very interesting and unusual, and it is full of various artistic original decisions and findings. For instance the girl's long golden braid that encompasses the scene and acts like the original ornamentation or a line of playing cards that crosses the exterior bottom of the box.
The box looks festive and smart, and this is achieved by using brilliant gold metal foil. Gold metal foil creates the radiance of all
