Description:

Tsar Morskoi(the Sea King) is thrilled to see Sadko. Sadko plays his gusli and the tsar dances to his content. The songs Sadko plays are so entrancing that it moves the tsar to offer him the hand of his daughter, Princess Volkhova. This is a precarious situation for Sadko since he is already married to Lubava, who is waiting for him on land. In this undersea world Sadko knows that he can only leave with the help of someone's magic, but they all love him so much that they don't want to see him go. Volkhova understands this, however, and her love for him runs so deep that she allows him to go back to his wife so that he and Lubava can be happy and together.
Feodor Kritov, from the village of Palekh, is the exceptional artist responsible for this depiction of boisterous elegance several feet below the sun drenched surface of the sea. Although the palette chosen by the artist is rather dark, detail and design are still found in abundant reserve. This darkness also brings out the personality of an underwater setting.
The characters and their surroundings truly are the highlight of the presentation. Every shade of green imaginable has been used to develop that bubbly, oceanic atmosphere. Besides Sadko, all of the other characters appear as if they are part of the ocean themselves. Bright gold and aluminum paint is used to add luster to the scene.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior. Gold ornamentation runs along the sides of the box. The box has a hinge from the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed and dated (2005) by the artist,
