Description: One of the most recognizable pieces of literature ever written has been depicted here by established Palekh artists, a married couple, Sergey and Maria Gurilyev. The personality of these talented artists is highly evident within the imaginative detail and intense color combinations.
Here the artists depicts a memorable moment from one of Jonathan Swift's most acclaimed works "Gulliver's Travels". This story is a pure example of the art of storytelling. It is difficult to recover from Swift's assembly of humor from chapter to chapter. It is not only entertaining it is a great commentary on human nature, the political beast, and the extremes that we encounter in life.
Here Gulliver has come to the land of the Lilliputians, and at this juncture just helped to ward off an invasion. This gained him favor in this miniature land, but he would have to soon go, as the kingdom found that it would be impossible for him to live among them, as he consumed so much. As he was such an oddity the people were afraid at first, then gradually warmed up to him. However, by the end of his stay here they were ready to accuse him of high treason, try, and execute him.
The palette is very soft and the delicate tones offer a great deal of aesthetic sustenance for the eyes. The artists' brushwork is very intricate and they make the architecture, ships, and the landscape own a dynamic appeal that create the magical setting here. Gulliver is depicted as looking like a well mannered, well educated, and distinguished man. Each of the Lilliputians (the whole number of them is fifteen persons) has his own personality and body language. Gold paint is used very sparingly, but adds the sparkle necessary to catch the eye.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold ornamentation frames the composition on the lid and wraps around the sides of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four rounded feet. The work is signed and dated (2006) by the artists in gold paints at the bottom of the composition.
