This traditional Palekh box is a creation of Natalya Koptyaeva.
In the center of the composition the artist depicts the farewell of the Snowmaiden with her parents. The Snowmaiden isn't a human being; she is the daughter of nature. Her parents, Faerie Spring and Mighty Winter, are depicted near her. In the right upper part of the composition the artist paints the Snowmaiden sitting inside the icy palace of her parents. The rest part of the composition is filled with figures of people (there are more than twenty human figures) and animals, the wooden architecture of the Berendey kingdom, and the detailed winter landscape.
Green, red and brown tones dominate here. Bright gold and aluminum paints are used to detail each element of the scene.
The scene is framed with an elegant gold pattern. More complex gold and aluminum ornamentation wraps around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top and the box rests on four legs. The artist wrote her name, the year of 1999, the title ("Snowmaiden") and the village name of Palekh along the bottom of the composition in gold paints.
