Description: Marie Lebedeva from the village of Palekh created this marvelous box. It features the amusement of nobility at the ball. Musicians play their musical instruments while ladies and gentlemen dance. The others sit at the small round tables talking and playing cards.
The work is notable for the complex structure of the composition, expressively painted human figures and a beautiful color palette. Gold and aluminum paints are used to add various details throughout the composition.
The scene is framed with gold beads and a string of elegant gold ornamentation. Gold and aluminum beads together with the intricate gold foliage pattern decorate the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening, and the box rests on a flat bottom. This original author's work is signed and titled by M. Lebedeva.
