Description: This traditional Palekh box has been created by Olga Tsyganova. It is based on the Russian fairy-tale "The Hump Backed Little Horse". This tale is about a lad, Ivan, who happened to catch the firebird. After that he was obliged by the tsar to fulfill different tasks. Ivan's friend, the Hump Backed Little Horse, helped the lad in everything. In the end Ivan married the beautiful princess, and became the ruler of the kingdom.
The box features several moments from the story: Ivan's traveling to the Moon's palace, Ivan saving the baby birds, and Ivan proposing marriage to the princess. The old man dressed in the blue robe is a story teller who tells the listeners this thrilling tale.
The scene is painted in bright tempera paints against the black background. Gold paint is used to aid in the adding of the detail.
The scene is framed with gold and silver beads. The sides are decorated intricate gold and aluminum floral patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening, and the box rests on a flat bottom. This original author's work is signed and dated (2006) by O. Tsyganova.
