Description: This is another exquisite creation of the talented M. Lebedeva from the village of Palekh. It shows the performance of the strolling actors. The gymnasts show dangerous acrobatic feats riding bicycles. One of them stands on hands and holds the hen-layer with his leg; while another one makes fried eggs and pours out tea while pedaling. The amazed audience applauds crying: Bravo!
The composition is masterfully designed. Skillfully painted architecture, composed of towers, balconies, roofs, and arches, surrounds dramatically the characters and the stage. The characters are life-like, their faces are individualized, their gestures and movements are easy and natural.
As customary with Palekh tradition, the black lacquer exterior also acts like the background for the scene. This furthers the beauty of the composition tremendously. The palette is very bright and vividly shows each character. Gold paint is used to detail the scene and fill it with a tremendous glow.
The scene is framed with intricate gold ornamentation. The box's sides are decorated with two parallel strings of gold beads, between them there is a wide band of gold and aluminum floral patterns. The interior is traditionally red.
The box is constructed out of papier-mache. The box has a hinge affixed from the top of the composition, and rests on a flat bottom. This original author's work is signed and dated (2006) by the artist.
