Description: This attractive box has been painted by Lyubov Kortikova. She finished the Palekh Art School in 1988; her teachers were Nemtinov B.M., Smirnov N.M., Bratchikova E.K., Golov V.I. and Kotov V.T. At present she lives and works in the village of Palekh. Themes of her works are fairy-tales, modern folklore and songs.
The box depicts a scene from the classic fairy-tale "Thumbelina" written by Hans Christian Andersen. Thumbelina is a tiny girl who was born from a flower.
During the story she has many adventures, and meets many animals, some of them become her friends, but the others are not so nice. In the end she meets a fairy prince who proposes marriage to her.
Here we can see a moment from the beginning of the story. Thumbelina escapes from the old Toad and her ugly son. She floats away from them on the large leaf of a water-lily fastened to the beautiful butterfly. She doesn't want to live in the swamp, and be the wife of the Toad's son.
The painting extends on the box's sides where the artist continues to paint the underwater life of the pond. The bottom part of the box is decorated with gold and aluminum beads.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer to paint the interior of the box. The box isn't hinged, and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist's name, the village of Palekh and the year of 2006.
