Description: This magnificent box was painted by Andriyashkin Dmitriy from the village of Palekh. It shows the carnival in the town of Venice. The composition is complex in its structure, and consists of various elements including twenty human figures dressed in beautiful fancy dresses and masks, and the skillfully detailed architecture. The scene is painted in bright tempera paints against the black background traditional for Palekh school of lacquer miniature painting. Bright and aluminum paints are used to created waves on the water, the numerous stars, the salute, add also to detail the architecture and the characters' costumes.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's sides and lid are decorated with beautiful gold and aluminum patterns. The box is hinged, and rests on four legs. It is signed with the artist's name, the title ("The Carnival in Venice"), and the village of Palekh.
