Description:

Roman Chibisov is a young talented Palekh artist whose popularity grows with each of his new boxes. He has a distinctive painting style, and his works are always easy to recognize. It is a real pleasure to contemplate his unique, originally painted boxes.
Here the artist has chosen to depict several scenes from the popular tale of, "The Sleeping Princess" written originally by French writer Charles Perrault in 1696. The French title of the tale is "La belle au bois dormant," which means "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood." This Charles Perrault's tale has since been adopted into various versions in many countries of the world; in Russia it is known as “The Sleeping Princess” written by A.S. Pushkin.
In the middle of the composition we can see the Sleeping Princess who has pricked her hand with a spindle. The gloomy prophecy of the witch has come true, and the whole kingdom fall into a profound slumber. Only the Prince may break an evil spell with his sweet kiss…
The scene is masterfully painted in bright tempera paints. Brilliant gold paint is applied with a very thin brush to enhance various details. Gold metal leaf shines brightly through some areas of the composition including the Princess's dress, the Moon, the Sun, the roses, roofs of the towers, ornaments on the Queen's attire and the chair she sits on.
On the box's sides Chibisov has painted the gorgeous pattern typical for all his works. It consists of flowers and leaves of a rose bush. To make it the artist has used lustrous gold metal leaf and tempera paints.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2005, the title, the year of 2007 and the village of Palekh.
