Description: This enchanting piece of authentic Palekh artistry was composed by D. Bonokin. It shows a recognizable scene from the Pushkin's tale of Tsar Saltan. Princess Swan transforms into a beautiful maiden before amazed Gvidon. To the left of this central scene Bonokin has painted the thirty-three warriors of the sea with their uncle Chernomor, while to the right of it we can see the magic squirrel that shells golden nuts with emeralds inside. In the background Tsar Saltan's ships approaching the magic island are depicted.
The composition painted in the traditional Palekh style is very bright and colorful. The costumes of the characters, the surrounding architecture and landscape are richly detailed with gold and aluminum paints.
The edges of the lid are decorated with a nice gold and aluminum ornamentation composed of beads and scrolls. The box's sides are adorned with more complex gold and aluminum floral design.
The box is made out of paper-mache. It has a hinge from the top of the composition, and rests on four legs. Black lacquer covers its exterior and red lacquer covers its interior. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, the title and the year of 2007.
