Description: This mesmerizing artistic creation has been composed by the talented Roman Chibisov. It shows a scene from “The Mistress of the Copper Mountain”, one of the “Tales of the Malachite Casket”, - the Ural Mountain series of inter-linking stories written by Pavel Bazhov. The story tells about the talented sculptor, Danilo, who became the slave of the Mistress of the Copper Mountain. Having seen the magic stone flower, he forgot everything about his former life, including his beloved Katyusha. The story ends happily: Katya saved Danilo and they were reunited.
In the foreground Chibisov has depicted Danilo presenting a copy of the stone flower to the Mistress of the Copper Mountain. A little lower the man tells the story of the Copper Mountain to the girl who contemplates the stones of malachite. In the background we can see Danilo and other craftsmen captivated by the Mistress of the Copper Mountain who work in the mine.
The work is painted in the unique Chibisov's style. The palette is bright and festive; each element of the composition is detailed thinly with lustrous gold paint. Gold metal leaf shines brilliantly through the rich ornaments the box's exterior is decorated with.
The box is made of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge has been fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed by the artist.
