Description:

This is a handcrafted beauty by established Palekh painter Alexey Zhiryakov. The work exudes his professionalism and the coloration invites the eye for permanent residence through appreciation.
The work is called "Mountain People" that sounds in Russian like "Goryane". Working on this box Zhiryakov has invented a magic world inhabited by mountain people. These people live in the deep caves, and mine precious stones and metals. Some of them are rich, and happy. They live in the luxurious underground palaces, and don't work. The others work hard in the caves; they mine precious stones and metals, and make beautiful jewels out of precious stones and gold.
The composition is masterfully designed. The upper part of it shows the hilly countryside. Its middle part features the supreme mountain spirit that looks like the dormant volcano. The rest part of the composition depicts the mountain people who live and work in their underground kingdom. On the box's sides Zhiryakov continues to paint the sceneries of the underground kingdom; here he has also painted some underground spirits that look like dormant volcanoes and underground rivers.
Greens and blues dominate the palette, while reds are infused for greater intensity. Gold and aluminum paints are used to add details and outline various areas of the composition.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. At the top of the composition Zhiryakkov has written his name, Palekh, the title and the year of 2007.
