Description:

This entrancing artistry was composed by the talented Roman Chibisov from the village of Palekh. This presentation is a spectacle for the eyes. Lavish decoration compliments the full bloom of radiant colors applied.
The work shows a fragment from the story of "Mikhailo Turtygin". This tale tells about the lad, Mikhailo Turtygin, who goes to save the beautiful princess kidnapped by the Dragon. Here we can see the moment when the tsar issues the following decree: "Anyone who can save my daughter from captivity will be rewarded with a half of my kingdom".
The composition is multi-figured; here the artist could find place for ten human figures. At the background there is a hilly landscape filled with tiny peasant houses, mills and fields. Several wild geese drawn at the top of the composition hover over this peaceful countryside.
The composition is beautiful, and very well painted in Chibisov's recognizable style. The character's clothes are contoured with gold paint to develop their luster and texture. The lid's artistry is framed with a gorgeous decoration in the form of winged dragons and fantastic birds painted over gold metal leaf inlay. The similar decoration can be found on the box's sides. It consists of a floral and leafy pattern intricately drawn in gold paint accompanied on each of the sides with the images of dragons and fantastic birds painted over gold metal leaf inlay.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition, and rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2008, the title and the village of Palekh.
