Description:

The prominent Palekh artist, Yekaterina Bykova, is the author of this gorgeous box. Here she has chosen to depict a scene from the tale "Three Bears" written by the great Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy. This tale tells about a little girl who found a house in the forest. The house was empty, and the girl began to behave like the owner of the house. She started to eat from a house owner's dishes, to sit on a house owner's chairs and even fell asleep on one of three beds. It turned out that the owners of the house were the family of bears. They nearly ate the girl for her insolent behavior but fortunately she managed to escape.
The scene is masterfully painted in Bykova's recognizable style. The details are enhanced with brilliant gold paint. The edges of the lid are adorned with a sparkling pattern made out of a gold metal leaf inlay. The box's exterior imitates a stone color (light grey veins and blurry spots are scattered densely against the black lacquered surface). The interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the lid's interior Bykova has written her name, Palekh, the title, the year of 2008, and the confirmation that this work is of original design.
