Palekh artist Olga Terentyeva has painted this composition depicting a sunny winter day in a Russian village. It is very cold outside but peasants are not afraid of frost. They do their everyday work, and even have time for entertainment. On the box's front side we can see a hunter flirting with a maiden who carries the yoke while the box's rear side depicts two maidens standing near the well and telling each other fresh, village gossips. On the box's lid the artist continues to paint a picturesque winter landscape.
Various shades of cold blues suitable for reproduction of a winter setting predominate here. All aspects of the scene are intricately detailed with fine lines created with precise brushwork. Gold and aluminum paints are used to add even more detail. There is a great sense of balance and linear flow in this composition; this shows the great artistic ability that Terentyeva possesses.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold and aluminum paints are used in the scrollwork that decorates the sides of the box's lid and the bottom part of the box's sides. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
