Description: This beautiful Palekh box has been painted by the experienced painter, Nina Bogacheova. She was born in 1941 in the village of Ilinskaya in Ivanovo region, 300 kilometers northeast of Moscow. She currently resides in Palekh, as a well-established Palekh artist.
The box's shows a scene from the Russian fairy-tale “Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf”. Here we can see a recognizable moment when Ivan Tsarevich steals the firebird from the Tsar Afron. This bird has been filching golden apples from the orchard of Ivan's father; and the old Tsar has ordered his three sons to fetch this bird. Only Ivan has managed to fulfill this difficult task.
The scene is painted in various shades of green and orange tempera paints. The scene is painted in the icon painting style, which has been passed on from generation to the next and used in painting beautiful scenes like this. The detail is executed with precise brushwork, and with the aid of gold that also brings out the bold quality in the colors.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed with dark red lacquer. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 2008.
