Description: This magnificent Palekh box is a creation of the famous Palekh artist, Roman Chibisov. Here the artist has painted some characters from Lewis Carroll's (1832-1898) classic tale “Through the Looking Glass”.
In the center of the composition we can see Alice, the White Queen, the White King, the Black Queen, the Lion and the Unicorn. A little above we can see the White and the Black Knight who intend to fight with each other. This group of characters is framed with wavy band made out of a lustrous gold metal leaf inlay. Gold metal leaf is also used to decorate the costumes of the characters and to create a sparkle of the trees painted at the background. In the left bottom corner of the box Chibisov has painted Humpty Dumpty while the right bottom corner depicts the Queen's guards.
The composition is drawn in bright tempera paints and neatly detailed with bright gold and silver paint. The box's sides are decorated with a rich floral pattern painted over shining gold metal leaf inlay. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on four rounded legs.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, the year of 2009 and the title ("Through the Looking Glass ").
