Description: This amazing box is a creation of the famous Palekh artist, Ekaterina Bykova.
Ekaterina was born in 1971 in the town of Temirtau, in the Karagan oblast. In 1991, she graduated from the Palekh Art School. Her teachers were V.F. Morokin and A.V. Gordeev. Then she began working for the Association of Palekh Artists. Bykova has travelled to the United States twice in the past, to participate in exhibitions where her miniatures were displayed.
The work is called “A Dream”. In the right bottom corner of the box we can see a sleeping boy. All around this scene the artist has depicted the boy's dream. The boy is dreaming that the characters of his favorite fairy-tale have gathered on the sunny meadow not far from his house…
The scene is beautifully painted in Bykova's recognizable style. Brilliant gold paint is used to enhance various details. The exterior of the piece imitates the color of green marble (green blurry spots and veins are scattered against the black lacquered surface of the box's exterior). The edges of the lid are adorned with a gold line. The box's interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the lid's interior Bykova has written Palekh, 2008, the title, the fact that this work is an artistic original, and her name, all in gold.
