This enticing Palekh box is a creation of Nina Smirnova, established Palekh Artist. It shows a scene from the popular Russian fairy-tale “The Snowmaiden” or “Snegurochka”. On the box's front side we can see the Snowmaiden walking dreamily through the winter forest while the rest space of the sides is filled with the neatly drawn winter landscape. The box's lid depicts a beautiful view of Tsar Berendey's kingdom.
The work is a good example of intricate Palekh art. Each minute element of the composition including various plants, animals and birds, is elaborately detailed with brilliant gold paint. Silver paint is used to create a sparkle of the snow.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The edges of the lid are decorated with a silver rolling pattern. The bottom part of the box's body is decorated with elaborate gold ornamentation accented with silver paint. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the name of the artist, Palekh and the year of 2008.
