This astonishing specimen of Palekh lacquer miniature art has been created by a well known Palekh artist, Alexey Zhiryakov. Born in 1974, in Palekh, Alexey Zhiryakov, comes from the family of artists. His parents are the famous Palekh, Yevgeniy and Galina Zhiryakovs.
The work is called “Gifts of Dwarfs”, and shows the queen and her Adviser accepting magic presents from the dwarfs. The Queen is confused. The presents of dwarfs are so unusual. They include flying, fire-breathing dragons, and magic stones. The Adviser whips to the Queen's ear that the presents are very valuable.
The composition demonstrates the unique and recognizable Alexey Zhiryakov's style. Each minute detail in the faces and costumes of characters, and in the room's interior shines with gold and aluminum sparkles. This effect is achieved with the help of gold and aluminum paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's sides are adorned with sumptuous patterns painted in blue and brown tempera paints and detailed with gold and aluminum. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, Palekh and the year of 2009.
