Veronika Chibisova is the author of this magnificent box. With extreme intricacy and sensitivity she depicts here some scenes from “The Lord of the Rings”, an epic high fantasy novel written by philologist J.R.R. Tolkien.
There is much action in the composition that is why it is very interesting to scan the drawing. Each character has his individual look and painted with a great accuracy. Each minute detail is enhanced with brilliant gold and silver paint. The additional scene from the novel is painted in the middle of the box's front side using tempera paints. From the left and right of this scene Chibisova has painted two dragons on the gold metal leaf using black tempera paints. Gold metal leaf can be also found in the complex and very beautiful foliage pattern that wraps around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the year of 2009, and the village of Palekh.
