Description: This splendid work is a creation of Alexey Zhiryakov from the village of Palekh. Alexey comes from the famous family of Palekh artist. His father, Yugeniy Zhiryakov, and mother, Galina Zhiryakova were the leading Palekh artists during the Soviet Union epoch. His brother, Andrey, is also a very talented artist whose works were displayed on our website.
The box shows a scene from "The Lord of the Rings", an epic high fantasy novel written by philologist J.R.R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel "The Hobbit" (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II.
The artist's palette is diverse but the predominance is given to greens, blues and browns. Zhiryakov works in details with gold and aluminum paint that are fine and make the composition radiate with a tremendous glow. On the box's sides the artist continuous to paint the sceneries of Tolkien's fantastic world.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The exterior is decorated with intricate gold and aluminum patterns. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the year of 2009, and the village of Palekh.
