Description:

Vera Smirnova of Palekh created this lacquer art masterpiece. She is part of a family of artists who are very well known in the village. Her sister, Tatyana paints exceptionally well and has a daughter Kseniya (Vera's niece), who also contributes tremendously to Palekh art and its evolution.
The work is called "The Trojan Horse", and shows a scene from Greek mythology connected with the historical event of the Trojan War. The Trojan Horse allowed the Greeks finally to enter the city of Troy and end the conflict. In the best-known version, after a fruitless 10-year siege, the Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse, and hid a select force of 30 men inside. The Greeks pretended to sail away, and the Trojans pulled the Horse into their city as a victory trophy. That night the Greek force crept out of the Horse and opened the gates for the rest of the Greek army, which had sailed back under cover of night. The Greek army entered and destroyed the city of Troy, decisively ending the war.
The composition is elaborately painted in various tones of tempera paints and neatly detailed in gold and silver paint. The box's exterior is decorated with beautiful gold ornaments.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, the title and the year of 2010.
