Description: This traditional Palekh box was painted by the talented artist Tatiana Kamanina. NOTE: This box was displayed on an Expo in All-Russia Museum of Folk and Applied Art in Moscow (May-September 2010).
It depicts a scene from the Russian fairy-tale "Geese and Swans". The lid shows the moment of the fairy-tale when the wicked birds Geese and Swans kidnapped the little boy by the order of Baba-Yaga. (Afterwards the boy's sister, Alyonushka, sets out in search of her brother. She finds him in Baba-Yaga's house and the children successfully escape from there. The wicked birds Geese and Swans start to pursuit them.)
Blue and green tones dominate here. The artist uses these colors as a basis for creating a scene that reflects the bucolic nature of the setting. Each element of the composition is detailed using gold or aluminum paint. The use of gold and aluminum is done with great skill and attention to detail.
Gold beads decorate the edges of the lid and the bottom border of the box. The sides of the box are adorned with beautiful gold floral ornamentation.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on four rounded legs. It is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Palekh, and the year of 2005.
