Description: This splendid Palekh box is a creation of the well-known miniature artist Tatiana Kamanina, the wife of another talented miniature artist, Sergey Kamanin. Her favorite themes to depict are Russian folklore and literature.
The work is called "Samovar Tea Party" and shows a noble gentleman and an elegant lady drinking tea from samovar. In this scene the artist has managed to express a romantic feeling of the bygone centuries and a special, aristocratic charm of Russian nobility.
The depicted couple is painted inside the summer veranda surrounded with rich vegetation. The scene painted in beautifully combined tempera paints is masterfully detailed with gold and silver outlines. Gold and silver paint is also used to decorate the box's exterior with intricate floral patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the name of the artist, Palekh, the title and the year of 2010 .
