The exceptional talent of Vera Smirnova is used to paint this scene from "The Chronicles of Narnia", the series of seven fantasy novels for children written by C. S. Lewis. It is considered a classic of children's literature and is the author's best-known work, having sold over 100 million copies in 47 languages. Set in the fictional realm of Narnia, a place where animals talk, magic is common, and good battles evil, the series narrates the adventures of various children who play central roles in the unfolding history of that world.
The composition is painted in Smirnova's recognizable style. The details are thoroughly contoured with bright gold and aluminum paint. This builds radiance and texture, both at the same time. The use of gold leaf here is truly awe inspirational wonder. Multiple sheets of gold leaf are placed to create an electric sparkle of the costumes of the characters, the armor of the knights and the sky.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's sides are adorned with a nice gold leafy pattern. For additional decoration the artist has painted small gold stars on the edges of the lid. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. On the lid's interior Smirnova has written her name, Palekh, the year of 2011 and the title.
