Description: This festive semi-spherical box is a creation of Galina Kuzmenko from the village of Palekh. This talented artist was born in 1948. During 1969-1974 she studied in the Palekh Art School. Since 1974 she worked in the Palekh workshops. Her favorite themes to depict are folklore and literature.
The box depicts merry Russian peasants celebrating a village wedding. They play different musical instruments and dance merrily in the village street. They have such a great fun that even animals: a rooster, a bear and a dog started to dance with them.
The composition is painted in bright tempera paints against the black lacquered background. The details are richly enhanced with gold and aluminum paint that adds a rich brightness to the work. Gold paint is also used to decorate the box's exterior with beautiful patterns.
The box is constructed out of high-grade paper-mache. The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer and interior is painted with red lacquer. The lid is hinged and the box stands on flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
