Description:

This beautiful box that shows various scenes from Pushkin's fairy-tale "The Golden Cockerel", has been painted by Vladimir Bogdanov. Bogdanov works in Palekh traditions using tempera paints. Icon-painting is favorite style of this painter but he prefers its modernized variant. Vladimir is interested in painting historic and epic themes as well as subjects of Pushkin's fairy-tales. Detailed accomplishment of a box and tidiness of its execution are the most principal elements in his artwork.
On the box's front side we can see Tsar Dadon who receives the magic golden cockerel from the astrologer. The box's lid shows the Shamakha Queen tempting Tsar Dadon near her eastern tent. On the box's rear side Bogdanov has drawn the moment when Tsar Dadon comes back to his kingdom with his bride, the beautiful Shemakha Queen.
Various shades of green tempera paints predominate here with addition of blues, reds and browns. The artist used a generous amount gold and silver paint for highlighting. Details of the architecture, the characters and the landscape are detailed with fine gold and aluminum paint accents. Avery aspect of the painting has been meticulously worked on with thin brushstrokes.
Bogdanov's skill as an artist is further demonstrated on the rich ornamentation that adorns the box. Shining gold vines, leaves and silver flowers look perfectly painted against the black lacquered background.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2008.
