Description: This interesting composition was painted by an established Palekh artist, Nina Suloeva.
Nina was born in Stavropolskiy Region (south of central part) of Russia.
She has stydied in Palekh art School in 1967-1972.
One of the features of her painting- the way she use the gold and silver paints-it is always shining and makes the box looks rich!
The work is called "Maslenitsa" or Pan-cake week, and the artist has painted some traditional folk customs connected with this spring festival. Here we can see burning of a woman of straw that embodies the winter, baking of sacrificial bread - pancakes, dressing masquerades, various games, driving in a sledge at high speed and many others.
Pan-cake week is a week before 40 days feast, when Orthodox Church not allowing to eat meat, drink alcohol and many other restrictions. People must have clear mind and think of God, not do any sins. After the feast we will celebrate Happy Easter!
The figures are painted in bright tempera paints and richly detailed with gold and aluminum paints!
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is covered with black lacquer while the interior is covered with red lacquer. The box rests flat and has a hinge at the top of the painting. The work is signed with the artist's name,title-Maslenitsa, Palekh, and the year of 2009.
