This charming box has been painted by a talented artist Natalie Zolotareova from the village of Palekh. It shows all kinds of winter outdoor fun in countryside.
We can see children sledging down the hill, playing snowballs,making a snowman, the older mamas and papas are gathering fire wood or getting the water from a river. On the second plan of the composition we can see several figures that are skates on the frosted river! All these kinds of winter amusements are very popular in Russia.
Composition is painted in traditional Palekh style-with bright colors over the black background. The artist has used blue and silver that are the most suitable for depiction of a winter scene.
The composition have gold ornament at the bottom of each egg.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid of each egg is hinged approximately at the half of each composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the name of the artist on a bigger egg below the painting.
