Description: This box was painted in a dual effort by the relative team of Brovkina Natalie and her daughter Gvozdkova Nina. The work is called "Lukomorye" that can be translated into English as "By the Ocean". In the Russian folklore "Lukomorye" is also known as the fairy land inhabited by various fairy-tale characters (here we can remember Pushkin's introduction to the popular poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila" that begins with the following line: "An oak tree greening by the ocean; A golden chain about it wound..."
The composition shows the characters from different Russian fairy-tales that live in Lukomorye. In the center of the composition the artists have painted poet Alexander Pushkin with a writing feather in his hand. From the right( and above) of this scene we can see the green oak, the Mermaid and the Learned Cat from Pushkin's introduction to "Ruslan and Lyudmila". The right bottom corner features Uncle Chernomore and his 33 Champions, also there is Princess Swan and Gvidon. In the left bottom corner the artists have drawn Sleeping (Dead) Princess and 7 Warriors. Magic Squirrel from Tsar Saltan's is depicted in the left upper corner. To the left, there is also Leshiy and Baba Yaga. And above in the sky- Ruslan is fighting with wizard Chernomor, who has took away his bride Ludmila.
The artist fills the composition with lots of action and detail. Each scene is enhanced with gold metallic paint that adds a rich brightness to the work.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold patterns accented with silver paint on the box's sides.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests flat the box is signed with the artists names, village of Palekh, and the year of 2008.
