Description: This dual-sided purse-shaped box has been drawn by the famous Palekh Master Nina Bogachova. Nina Bogachova became a Honored Artist of Russia in 2000, her works are exhibited in several Museums in Russia, such as Palekh State Museum, All-Russia Museum of Applied and Folk Art (Moscow) and some others.
The box shows a scenes from the popular fairy-tale "The Snowmaiden", or "Snegurochka". The tale was also adapted into an opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
On one side of the box (two figures)we can see the Snowmaiden saying goodbye to her mother Fairy Spring. The scene is painted in the icon painting style, which has been passed on from generation to the next and used in painting beautiful scenes like this. The detail is executed with precise brushwork, and with the aid of gold that also brings out the bold quality in the colors.
The other side box shows the another scene from the same tale "Snowmaiden".Next to the Snowmaiden, Mizgir makes a declaration of love to her. To the right Lel plays his flute, while to the right there is one of the village girl.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with intricate gold ornaments. The lid is hinged from the bottom of the scenes. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, titles and the year of 2013.
